Niger’s military ruler strengthens alliances on first foreign tour

Niger’s military ruler, General Abdourahamane Tiani, embarked on his inaugural international tour, meeting with counterparts in Mali and Burkina Faso. The visit marked Tiani’s first diplomatic engagements since assuming power in July.
Tiani’s arrival in Burkina Faso on Thursday evening was part of a “friendship and working visit” with Captain Ibrahim Traore. Discussions between the leaders encompassed shared concerns, notably the fight against terrorism and socio-economic development, as outlined in a statement from Burkina’s presidency.
Earlier in Bamako, Tiani expressed gratitude to his Malian counterpart, Colonel Assimi Goita, for the unwavering support from Malian authorities and people. The leaders emphasized their commitment to transforming the Sahel region from an “area of insecurity” to “an area of prosperity,” underlining their common goals.
The three Sahel nations signed a pact in September, including provisions for mutual defense in case of an attack on any member’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity.” Tiani, in Mali, acknowledged the solidarity of the neighboring countries, particularly in the face of sanctions imposed on Niger by regional and Western partners after the coup.
Regarding the sanctions, Tiani expressed his willingness to negotiate, emphasizing the impact on the people rather than the authorities. He stressed the importance of engaging with sincere individuals motivated by goodwill, advocating for consideration of the well-being of the African people.
The leaders also united in their efforts against jihadism, reflecting a shared commitment to combating security challenges in their respective countries. Tiani, following his ascent to power, pledged to return Niger to civilian rule within three years.
Meanwhile, Mali indefinitely postponed a scheduled presidential election for early 2024. The country plans to host ministers from Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali to discuss operational details of the new Sahel alliance, further solidifying regional cooperation.
