South Africa withdraws 2027 Women’s World Cup bid

South Africa has officially withdrawn its bid to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, opting to focus on a more thoroughly prepared bid for 2031 instead. The decision was motivated by a desire to avoid presenting a hastily assembled proposal to Fifa in December.
Lydia Monyepao, the head of the South African Football Association, emphasized the importance of a well-prepared bid.
With South Africa’s withdrawal, the competition to host the 2027 World Cup narrows down to three remaining bids: Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany; the United States and Mexico; and Brazil. The decision on the host nation or nations will be determined at the Fifa Congress scheduled for May in Bangkok.
The most recent Women’s World Cup took place in 2023, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, with Spain emerging as the victorious team.
