DR Congo's opposition leader Katumbi, promises to 'liberate country'

In the final stretch before the Democratic Republic of Congo’s upcoming elections, opposition leader Moise Katumbi has intensified his campaign efforts, seeking to secure the nation’s top leadership position.

Addressing a sizable audience in the capital city of Kinshasa, Katumbi pledged to “liberate the country” on the day of the Congolese elections.

During his rally, attended by thousands of supporters, opposition presidential candidate Moïse Katumbi outlined his vision to free the nation by creating employment opportunities for the youth and reducing the exchange rate of the US dollar. In a spirited address, he expressed his commitment to transformative change, rallying the citizens of Congo to join him in this pursuit.

“I’ve come to change the country, I’ve come to liberate the country, sons of the Congo, what are we going to liberate together? (Audience response: The country), what’s the date? (Audience response: the 20th),” he declared. Katumbi also addressed financial concerns related to election logistics, asserting his willingness to contribute funds for organizing the polls.

Responding to allegations about his nationality raised by opponents, including Defense Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba, Katumbi dismissed the claims of being a Zambian. In a defiant tone, he refuted accusations of foreign status and countered with questions about his rivals’ extensive overseas travels.

“They say I’m a foreigner (Audience response: No). Who are the foreigners (Audience response: Them). Who have made over 666 trips abroad (Audience response: Them),” Katumbi asserted.

A prominent figure in business and the owner of the renowned “Tout Puissant Mazembe” soccer club, Moïse Katumbi previously served as the governor of the mining province of Katanga from 2007 to 2015, a key economic hub in the country.

As the Democratic Republic of Congo approaches its voting day on December 20th, the political landscape remains dynamic, with Katumbi positioning himself as a transformative force for the nation’s future.
