Gambian President Barrow celebrates boost to maritime security with Spanish-donated patrol vessel
Gambian President Adams Barrow presided over the official handover and commissioning ceremony of a state-of-the-art Fast Patrol Vessel, generously donated by the Kingdom of Spain to The Gambia Navy.
Addressing the gathering at the inauguration, President Barrow expressed his elation, emphasizing the vessel’s pivotal role in advancing The Gambia’s national security objectives.
“In line with my government’s development agenda and our vision of becoming one of the most prosperous and peaceful nations in the world, we place a high premium on national security,” stated President Barrow.
Highlighting the economic importance of the maritime sector to The Gambia, President Barrow underscored its significant contribution to food security and employment generation.
Recognizing the critical role of effective maritime security in safeguarding these interests, he reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting The Gambia Navy in becoming not only a formidable military force at sea but also a highly competent Maritime Law Enforcement and Security Service.
President Barrow revealed that this commitment aligns with the overarching objectives of The Gambia’s Security Sector Reform Programme.
Despite competing demands on the national budget, he assured continued support to enhance the Navy’s capabilities through improved equipment and training.
Expressing gratitude, President Barrow extended sincere thanks to the Kingdom of Spain for their enduring friendship with The Gambia.
He acknowledged the invaluable support from the Spanish Guardia Civil, which materialized in the form of the Patrol Vessel. The President pointed out that similar assistance had been extended by Spain in 2008, marking the beginning of a fruitful collaboration that has steadily gained momentum over the years.
President Barrow commended the ongoing cooperation between The Gambia Navy and Spain’s Guardia Civil, emphasizing their joint efforts to strengthen sea safety and security.
