Nigerian “Gentle Boy” Olowu crowned WABU super welterweight champion

Taiwo Olowu, widely known as Gentle Boy, has emerged victorious as the new West African Boxing Union (WABU) super welterweight champion.

The electrifying match unfolded at GOtv Boxing Night 30, hosted at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos on Tuesday.


Gentle Boy secured his title with a hard-fought win over Ghana’s Alidu Sulemana, who stepped in as a last-minute replacement for Michael Ansah.

The bout concluded with a split decision in favor of the Nigerian champion, marking Olowu’s 16th triumph in 17 professional fights.

The fiercely contested event featured several other thrilling encounters. Sifon “Best” Iwatt showcased his prowess in the ring, outpunching Saheed “Eagle” Azeez to claim the national super flyweight title.

Best’s victory, sealed by unanimous decision, also earned him the prestigious Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy, along with a substantial N2 million cash prize, as the best boxer of the night.

In a knockout spectacle, Ahmed “Eshe” Ganiyu triumphed over Ayanfe “Battle Boy” Adeoye in the fifth round of the national light welterweight bout.

Abdulafeez “Big Name” Osoba delivered a commanding performance, securing victory over Christopher Ucheji via a technical knockout in the national super welterweight category.

Bolatito “Black Tito” Oluwole showcased her dominance in the ring, beating Blessing Abisoye via unanimous decision to retain her national female cruiserweight belt. Meanwhile, the national bantamweight challenge bout between Arabambi Ojo and Ibrahim “Golden Boy” Opeyemi concluded in a draw, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats.

The night’s festivities not only celebrated the crowning of new champions but also reinforced the resilience and skill of Nigeria’s boxing talents on the regional stage.
