President Murmu highlights dual nature of AI at RTMNU convocation
In a thought-provoking address at the 111th convocation of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), President Droupadi Murmu underlined the double-edged sword of artificial intelligence (AI), praising its positive impact on society while cautioning against its misuse, particularly in the creation of deepfake videos.
President Murmu, serving as the chief guest, asserted that while technology has become an integral part of the youth’s understanding, its potential for both good and harm demands a careful approach.
“If used properly, it will benefit society and the country, but if misused, it will affect humanity,” she warned.
The focus of her concern was on the rising threat of deepfake technology, which involves the manipulation of visuals to replace individuals in existing images or videos with someone else’s likeness.
She advocated for moral value-based education as a means to navigate the ethical complexities arising from such technological advancements.
This comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent caution regarding the potential crisis and social discontent that could be fueled by AI-generated deepfakes.
He urged the media to raise awareness about the misuse of this technology.
President Murmu also expressed delight at the significant representation of girls among the degree holders at the convocation.
She emphasized the pivotal role of investing in girls’ education as the most valuable contribution to the country’s progress, highlighting that 40% of the total students at RTMNU and its affiliated colleges are girls.
Addressing the rapidly changing technological landscape, Murmu emphasized the need for continuous learning.
She encouraged students to maintain curiosity and a lifelong commitment to learning.
The president aligned these principles with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aiming to foster education rooted in Indian ethos and values.
Promoting interdisciplinary studies, international collaboration, research, and innovation were key components of her vision for the education system. Referring to students as “assets” of society, she expressed confidence in their ability to contribute significantly to the country’s progress.
Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, highlighted the pivotal role of universities in national progress, particularly in creating a skilled human resource.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari commended the Nagpur University for its illustrious history and stressed the importance of translating knowledge into wealth for India to achieve Prime Minister Modi’s ambitious goal of a USD 5 trillion economy.
