Tom Curran faces 4-match ban in big bash league

Sydney Sixers’ Star Bowler, Tom Curran, failed to overturn his four-match ban in the Big Bash League, expressing “deep regrets” for his actions that led to the suspension.

The seasoned England cricketer faced disciplinary action for intimidating umpire Muhammad Qureshi in a pre-match incident against the Hobart Hurricanes.

In a pre-match practice run, Curran’s actions forced umpire Qureshi to move to avoid a potential collision, resulting in a charge of “intimidation or attempted intimidation of an umpire” by Cricket Australia.

Despite Curran’s 30 T20 games for England and a decade-long professional career, he couldn’t escape the consequences of his conduct.

The cricketer, known for his sportsmanship, stated, “Across my decade-long professional career, I have always sought to have a friendly and respectful relationship with match officials.”

Expressing genuine remorse, Curran acknowledged his mistake in continuing to practice his run-up in the direction of umpire Qureshi. He apologized to everyone affected by the incident.

Cricket Australia’s General Manager, Alistair Dobson, emphasized the importance of respecting match officials, stating, “Umpires are part of the lifeblood of cricket, and it is essential they are respected and appreciated by players at all levels of the game.”

Upholding the ban, Dobson acknowledged Curran’s remorse and looked forward to his return to the Sydney Sixers’ lineup.

Rachael Haynes, the head of the Sixers, accepted the punishment, although the club sought to appeal based on previous code of conduct cases.

She clarified, “While not disagreeing that Tom had breached the code through his conduct, we felt that the charge was inconsistent with other offenses.”

Despite the unsuccessful appeal, the Sixers respect the ruling and anticipate Curran’s return to the field in Sixers colors.
