United Cup: Spain emerges victorious in opening match
The United Cup kicked off in a blaze of intense competition as World number 11, Beatriz Haddad Maia, inaugurated her season with a commendable win.
However, the triumph was bittersweet for Brazil, as they ultimately succumbed 2-1 to Spain in a riveting clash in Perth.
The decisive moment unfolded in a closely contested doubles rubber, where Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Sara Sorribes Tormo emerged victorious over Haddad Maia and the two-time Grand Slam winner Marcelo Melo, securing a 6-4, 7-5 win.
Spain’s Davidovich Fokina set the tone for the team’s success by claiming victory in the opening singles match against Thiago Seyboth Wild with a convincing scoreline of 6-4, 6-0.
Despite needing four match points, he clinched the first win of the tournament.
Haddad Maia showcased her prowess in the first WTA Tour match of the season, leveling the tie at 1-1 by defeating Sorribes Tormo with a score of 7-6 (7/1), 6-2.
The match hung in the balance, with Brazil narrowly escaping a match point before succumbing in the final moments.
“I knew I had to be calm near the end,” reflected Davidovich Fokina. “I needed to focus on every point — in doubles things can change very quickly.” Sorribes Tormo attributed their success to teamwork, stating, “When you have your team behind you and such an amazing partner, everything is easier. This was my first mixed doubles; I’m very happy to win.”
Spain’s absence of tennis legend Rafael Nadal was notable, with the 18-nation mixed teams event unfolding in Perth and Sydney.
Nadal, returning from a year-long injury absence, opted to make his comeback at the Brisbane International.
The stage is set for more gripping encounters as hosts Australia prepare to face Britain later on Friday, promising fans an exciting continuation to the United Cup.
