WHO urges immediate ceasefire in Gaza

World Health Organization (WHO) staff has witnessed the heart-wrenching aftermath of deadly strikes on a refugee camp.
The scenes were described as “harrowing” by WHO’s Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who, via social media platform X, recounted distressing stories of entire families perishing and children fighting for their lives.
Amid the rubble, one child was reported to have lost their entire family in the strike, echoing the profound loss experienced by a nurse at the hospital.
The Al-Maghazi refugee camp, targeted in the Israeli strikes late Sunday, saw at least 70 reported casualties, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
The Israeli military, acknowledging the incident, stated it is “reviewing” and emphasized commitment to international law, including minimizing harm to civilians.
Rows of victims’ bodies, shrouded in white bags, filled the Al-Aqsa hospital in Deir al-Balah, underscoring the overwhelmed capacity of the medical facility.
WHO’s Emergency Medical Teams coordinator, Sean Casey, shared a heartbreaking account of doctors providing palliative care to a critically injured nine-year-old named Ahmed. Casey stressed the lack of capacity to manage complex cases, stating, “There’s nothing anybody can do for him.”
Gaza’s health ministry reported at least 20,670 casualties from Israel’s relentless military campaign, with WHO warning that only nine of the region’s original 36 hospitals remain partially functional. Casey, visibly moved, called the situation “unacceptable” and urged an immediate ceasefire.
The plea echoed the sentiment shared by WHO’s Director-General, who insisted, “This latest strike on a Gazan community shows just why we need a #CeasefireNOW.”
The conflict, initiated by Hamas on October 7, has resulted in significant civilian casualties and seized hostages, according to Israeli figures.
