Banjul Summit propels Gambia to OIC chairmanship, signals global leadership

In a landmark press conference held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center, key stakeholders celebrated the triumphant conclusion of the 15th Islamic Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Banjul, The Gambia.

This historic event, hosted from May 4th to 5th, 2024, not only solidified The Gambia’s international stature but also marked its ascension to the OIC chairmanship for the next three years.


At the press conference, attended by distinguished figures including H.E. Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, Hon. Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, Minister of Information, Ambassador Yankuba Dibba, CEO of OIC Gambia, and Mr. Nfally Fadera, Head of Brand and Communication of OIC Gambia, enthusiasm and pride were palpable as they reflected on the summit’s resounding success.

Ambassador Yankuba Dibba, CEO of OIC Gambia, expressed profound delight, labeling the Banjul Summit as one of the best-organized gatherings in the OIC’s history. H.E. Mamadou Tangara extended heartfelt gratitude to all contributors, acknowledging President Adama Barrow’s unwavering support and the invaluable contributions of Gambian citizens.

Tangara also recognized partner countries such as Saudi Arabia, Mauritania, Senegal, Morocco, Turkey, and Indonesia for their indispensable collaboration.

Hon. Dr. Ismaila Ceesay hailed President Adama Barrow’s assumption of the OIC chairmanship, underlining The Gambia’s proactive stance on global issues and humanitarian aid. He also commended the exceptional efforts of the OIC Secretariat and all stakeholders involved in the summit’s success.

Nfally Fadera underscored the significant achievements made by The Gambia in hosting the summit, highlighting that 90% of contracts were awarded to Gambian-owned businesses. Gambian enterprises played pivotal roles in logistics, transport, media, and other critical areas, showcasing the nation’s capabilities on the world stage.

The press conference concluded with a sense of optimism and readiness as The Gambia prepares to take on its new role as the chair of the OIC.

This pivotal moment not only marks a milestone for The Gambia but also sets the stage for enhanced collaboration and global engagement within the Islamic community. The successful Banjul Summit has firmly positioned The Gambia as a dynamic leader on the international stage, ready to embrace the responsibilities of OIC chairmanship with dedication and vision.
