Dominican Republic president Abinader declares self winner of presidential election

President Luis Abinader declared victory in the Dominican Republic’s presidential election, a contest heavily influenced by concerns over crime and safety. Though official results have yet to be announced, Abinader’s lead appears insurmountable.

As of Monday afternoon, Abinader had secured 57.46% of the votes, with over 99% of polling stations reporting, according to the electoral board’s real-time data. Despite the lack of a formal declaration from election authorities, two of Abinader’s top challengers have conceded.

“Tonight I called President Luis Abinader by phone to recognize his electoral victory and wish him success in his administration,” tweeted Leonel Fernandez, a leading candidate. Abel Martínez, another contender, stated, “I’d like to wish luck to Luis Abinader. Our country has plenty of challenges; I ask God that we overcome them as a nation.”

Abinader, a 56-year-old former economist and businessman, first took office in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. His tenure has seen the Dominican Republic emerge as one of the fastest-growing economies in the region. If confirmed, his new term will extend until 2028.

The incumbent president has campaigned on promises of continued economic expansion, development, reform, and anti-corruption efforts. Analysts expect his second term to focus on these priorities, building on the successes of his first administration.

The election occurs against a backdrop of a deepening political and social crisis in neighboring Haiti. Abinader’s government has responded by sealing the border and restricting airspace, actions that have drawn criticism for fostering anti-Haitian sentiment. In 2022, the U.S. embassy cautioned Black and “darker-skinned” Americans about potential increased scrutiny by Dominican authorities amid a crackdown on immigration.

Abinader’s assertive stance on these issues has resonated with voters concerned about national security and crime, contributing to his broad electoral support. As the nation awaits the final, official results, the president’s substantial lead and the concessions of his opponents indicate a likely continuation of his policies and leadership style.
