Cape Verde celebrates, honours boxer de Pina as nation’s first Olympic medalist
The Cape Verde government has awarded the Sports Merit Medal 1 to David de Pina, the country’s first Olympic medalist.
This recognition is not only a celebration of de Pina’s incredible achievement in securing a bronze medal in the men’s 51-kilogram boxing division at the recent Olympics in Paris but also a tribute to the resilience and determination that defines the Cape Verdean spirit.
The government expressed immense pride in de Pina’s accomplishment, stating,
“This recognition, more than deserved, not only honors David for winning the first Olympic medal for our country but also for exemplifying the ability to overcome challenges that is so characteristic of our nation.” The significance of having an Olympic medalist has resonated deeply within the country, as it marks a historic milestone in Cape Verde’s sporting journey.
Reflecting on his achievement, de Pina stated, “I did it for my country because we deserve it. We are a small country, a small island, and we never did this before. I’m the first one to write this story, ever!” He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support he received from his fellow citizens, acknowledging the struggles the nation has faced on its path to this historic moment.
In recognition of his achievement, the Cape Verdean government has pledged to adjust de Pina’s Athlete Scholarship to reflect his merit and set ambitious goals for the upcoming Olympic cycle. This includes comprehensive training and competition plans aimed at securing a medal at the Los Angeles Olympics, with aspirations for gold or silver medals in line with de Pina’s and his coach’s ambitions. The government is also calling for increased support from corporate sponsors to bolster the athlete’s journey.
Prime Minister José Ulisses emphasized that the progress being made in sports is not merely a stroke of luck but the result of the talent and hard work of athletes, as well as the dedicated efforts of federations, associations, and government policies. He affirmed that investment in sports is vital for nurturing future talents and achieving even greater heights.
David de Pina’s remarkable journey serves as an inspiration for the nation, igniting hope and ambition among aspiring athletes in Cape Verde, and solidifying his legacy as a trailblazer in the country’s sporting history.
