ECOWAS supports flood-affected communities in Nigeria

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched impactful projects aimed at uplifting communities across its member states.

A delegation from the ECOWAS Commission, led by Mr. Godfrey Ameachi Alozie, Program Officer for Humanitarian Affairs, was present at the Launching Ceremony of the ECOWAS Nigeria Humanitarian Support initiative on July 30, 2024, in Adamawa State, Nigeria.

This initiative specifically targets communities devastated by the catastrophic floods of 2022.

To aid in recovery, Nigeria’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has received approximately $906,205 in flood relief funds from ECOWAS.

This significant financial support aims to enhance community resilience and facilitate recovery efforts. In partnership with the Nigerian Red Cross, the initiative focuses on six of the most affected states: Adamawa, Anambra, Kebbi, Kogi, Oyo, and Rivers, with a goal of reaching 3,500 vulnerable households.

The comprehensive aid package includes essential food items such as 25kg of rice, 15kg of gari, 12kg of beans, and 5 liters each of palm and vegetable oil. Beneficiaries will also receive a debit card loaded with 91,500 Naira, allowing for monthly withdrawals of 30,500 Naira.

Furthermore, the initiative plans to construct two boreholes in each state, significantly improving access to clean drinking water for affected communities.

During the inauguration, Mr. Alozie emphasized ECOWAS’s commitment to enhancing living standards and ensuring that no one is left behind in the recovery process.

He highlighted the shift from an “ECOWAS of States” to an “ECOWAS of People,” underscoring the focus on direct impact on populations.

“Floods wreak havoc and expose us to losses,” he stated, but with this initiative, he believes that it will greatly improve the living conditions of the families affected.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mr. Abel Enitan, acknowledged the devastating impact of the 2022 floods but expressed gratitude towards ECOWAS and the Nigerian Red Cross for their crucial support in addressing the urgent needs of affected communities.

Representing the Governor of Adamawa State, Commissioner Barrister Bello Diram praised the initiative, affirming the state government’s commitment to supporting all humanitarian efforts.

“Your choice of Adamawa State demonstrates a deep understanding of the needs and potential of the region,” he remarked.

Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, the President of the Nigerian Red Cross, commended the collaborative efforts of ECOWAS and the Nigerian government. He reiterated the Red Cross’s dedication to restoring hope and dignity to those affected by disasters, stating, “We are here not only for today but for as long as it will take to alleviate human suffering.”
