Gambia: Soma police arrest 2 people for stealing dozens of bicycles
The Soma Police Department has apprehended two individuals, Yaya Bojang and Buba Nyang, in connection with a series of bicycle thefts that have plagued the region.
The suspects are accused of orchestrating a scheme to steal pedal bicycles and subsequently selling them under the guise of a legitimate container shipment operation.
The investigation, which has been ongoing for several weeks, reached a pivotal moment when Yaya Bojang confessed to his involvement in the thefts. Bojang disclosed that he had been selling the stolen bicycles in Madina Kaif, Kiang.
This critical piece of information enabled the police to recover an initial batch of eighteen bicycles.
Further probing into the matter revealed a more extensive network of thefts and sales. The police uncovered that a total of twenty-eight bicycles had been distributed and sold across various nearby villages.
The recovery efforts are still in progress, with the police actively working to locate and reclaim more of the stolen bicycles.
The arrest of Bojang and Nyang has been lauded as a substantial stride toward curbing the wave of bicycle thefts that have affected the community.
The Soma police have emphasized their commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring that justice is served.
“We are dedicated to thoroughly investigating this case and bringing all involved parties to justice,” a spokesperson for the Soma Police stated. “The cooperation and vigilance of our community members have been invaluable in this process, and we will continue to provide updates as the case progresses.”
The police have urged residents to report any suspicious activities or information that could aid in the recovery of the remaining stolen bicycles. Community outreach initiatives are being planned to educate citizens on preventive measures and the importance of reporting crimes promptly.
