Nigeria wins medals at 2024 Pan African Maths Olympiad
Nigeria has clinched two silver medals at the prestigious 2024 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO).
The event, hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa, brought together young mathematical talents from across the continent.
Elvis Chiedozie Ekwelem from Rivers State and Oghenerukevwe Patrick Esemitodje from Lagos State emerged as Nigeria’s silver medalists, showcasing their exceptional skills and dedication in the annual continental mathematics contest.
The competition witnessed participation from over 20 countries, with additional eight nations joining virtually. Prof Zeblon Vilakazi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Witwatersrand, who served as the host, lauded the Nigerian students for their “exceptional intellectual rugidity, dedication, and talent.”
He noted that the competition aims to promote and encourage academic excellence and research among young African mathematical scholars.
He emphasized that the strong performance of the Nigerian students was a testament to their deep understanding of the subject.
Prof Vilakazi further highlighted that the students demonstrated the willingness, eagerness, and commitment to excel in the subject at the continental level and are therefore bright candidates for the future development of the subject.
The success of Ekwelem and Esemitodje not only brings pride to Nigeria but also underscores the potential and talent present in the country’s youth, poised to make significant contributions to the field of mathematics and beyond.
