Chidimma Adetshina has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, after a tumultuous experience during her attempt to compete in the Miss South Africa pageant last month.

Adetshina, 23, was born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother, holding South African citizenship.

Her entry into the Miss South Africa competition ignited a fierce national debate marked by xenophobic sentiments, with some South Africans, including government officials, expressing opposition to her participation due to her Nigerian heritage.

The backlash against her candidacy underscored the deep-seated tensions between South Africans and Nigerian nationals, which have, at times, erupted into violence and discrimination against Nigerian immigrants and their businesses in South Africa.

Faced with mounting pressure and hostility, Adetshina made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Miss South Africa pageant, a move that highlighted the painful realities of xenophobia that many Nigerians endure in the region.

In her acceptance speech as Miss Universe Nigeria, Adetshina conveyed a message of unity and resilience, stating, “I just want everyone to know that this crown is not just a crown of beauty, it is going to unite us as one. I am really proud and grateful that I am going to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe, and I know we are going to win.”

Adetshina’s journey to the crown serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles against xenophobia faced by Nigerians living in South Africa, where tensions have historically escalated, leading to violence and attacks on foreign-owned businesses.

This backdrop of hostility makes her victory even more significant, as it symbolizes hope and the resilience of those navigating the complexities of identity in a multicultural landscape.

With the Miss Universe pageant scheduled to take place in Mexico this November, Adetshina emerges as a beacon of hope and unity. Her story illustrates how beauty and grace can transcend borders and cultural differences, fostering a sense of solidarity amidst challenges.
