Dangote Petroleum Refinery Set to Roll Out Petrol Amidst Ongoing Disputes
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is poised to introduce its first batch of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, into the Nigerian market. This development follows a successful test-run of the product at the 650,000-barrel-per-day facility.
According to industry insiders, the Dangote Group and the Federal Government are finalizing arrangements for the product’s distribution, with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) reportedly being the sole authorized distributor at this stage.
The refinery, which was initially expected to launch its petrol products in June, faced delays due to crude oil shortages and a dispute with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Regulatory Authority over allegations of substandard diesel production. However, the Federal Government’s intervention, allowing crude oil purchases in local currency, has helped to resolve some of these issues.

Despite claims from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) that it facilitated the supply of 29 million barrels of crude oil to the refinery, the Dangote Group disputes this, stating that they have not received these allocations. The group also criticized international oil companies for prioritizing sales to Asian markets and using foreign intermediaries, which they argue inflates the local price of crude.

As the rollout of Dangote petrol draws near, many Nigerians are hopeful that the refinery’s operations will lead to a reduction in the pump price of PMS, and make it easy for citizens to get PMS.
