Foreign Minister Tangara ensures accountability, professionalism in Gambia’s diplomatic service

Foreign Minister Dr. Mamadou Tangara, addressing the National Assembly yesterday, emphasized the Gambia’s commitment to maintaining a high standard of professionalism in its diplomatic service. Responding to questions about the recall of several Gambian diplomats over the years due to various incidents, Tangara assured the Assembly that the ministry is taking decisive steps to safeguard the country’s image on the global stage.

While declining to name individuals involved, Minister Tangara confirmed that some diplomats whose actions had caused embarrassment have been removed from the foreign service. This includes diplomats who were expelled by the U.S. government last year for offenses like visa fraud, as well as others recalled from Cuba and Mauritania due to separate incidents.

Minister Tangara explained that while those recalled remain part of the civil service, they will no longer serve in foreign postings. “We can’t remove them from the civil service, but we ensure they no longer represent the Gambia abroad, as the country’s image is paramount,” he said.

By holding diplomats accountable and removing those unfit for foreign service, Tangara affirmed the government’s dedication to upholding the country’s international reputation. He stressed that ensuring professionalism within the diplomatic corps is crucial, and steps will continue to be taken to maintain the highest standards.

This move reflects the Gambia’s resolve to strengthen its diplomatic integrity and ensure that those representing the nation uphold its values and image.
