Nigeria: FG and ASUU set for further discussions to resolve outstanding issues
The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are set to meet today, Wednesday, 11 September 2024, to continue discussions aimed at resolving key issues and averting a potential strike. This follows a productive meeting held on Monday, 9 September, where committees were formed to address ASUU’s concerns, including IPPIS/EAA, salary matters, the renegotiated 2009 agreement, and the proliferation of universities.
ASUU had earlier issued an ultimatum to the government, warning of a possible strike if their longstanding demands were not met. However, the government has shown a strong commitment to resolving these issues, many of which have been the subject of strikes in previous years.
The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, highlighted the government’s efforts, pointing to the resolution of the IPPIS problem as a sign of progress. He expressed optimism that with the commitment of the current administration, a lasting solution would be reached.
“Most of ASUU’s demands date back to 1981, and every government has dealt with ASUU strikes. However, the President has made a firm commitment to finding a permanent solution, and his actions so far reflect that promise,” Mamman said.
Both sides are hopeful that continued dialogue will lead to meaningful progress and ensure stability in Nigeria’s university system.
