Nigerian senator praises Tangara as ideal leader for Commonwealth’s future

Nigerian Senator Ned Nwoko of Delta State has endorsed Gambia’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Mamadou Tangara, as the ideal candidate to lead the Commonwealth into a new era. In a statement released on Tuesday following a meeting with Dr. Tangara, Senator Nwoko expressed his strong belief in Tangara’s vision, particularly in the area of reparative justice for Africa.

Nwoko, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Reparation & Repatriation, was impressed by Dr. Tangara’s commitment to key global issues. “Tangara emphasized the importance of addressing reparative justice for Africa, mitigating global issues of peace and security, and promoting human rights, climate action, and digital inclusion across our community of nations,” Nwoko stated.

The senator highlighted that these concerns align closely with his own advocacy for reparative justice, making Tangara a standout leader. “I am convinced that under Tangara’s leadership, the Commonwealth can play a transformative role in addressing these pressing matters,” Nwoko added.

Tangara, currently running for the Commonwealth Secretary-General position against candidates from Ghana and Lesotho, has demonstrated a deep understanding of global challenges. His extensive experience and commitment to Africa’s progress, according to Nwoko, make him the perfect choice to guide the Commonwealth.

During a debate at Chatham House in London on September 11, 2024, Tangara reinforced his stance on the Commonwealth facilitating discussions around reparations for slavery and colonialism. Senator Nwoko, who closely followed the debate, remarked, “His commitment to such causes is clear, and I believe his leadership would be instrumental in ensuring that the Commonwealth takes a more active role in advocating for these initiatives.”

Nwoko further emphasized the significance of Tangara’s candidacy, saying, “Reparative justice for Africa should be a top priority for the Commonwealth in the coming years. I firmly believe that Tangara’s candidacy presents an extraordinary opportunity for the Commonwealth to embrace this mission under the leadership of an African Secretary-General.”

The election for the next Commonwealth Secretary-General will take place at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Apia, Samoa, from October 21 to 26.
