South Sudan’s Filda Bandas breaking barriers as a female footballer

Filda Bandas, one of South Sudan’s few female footballer and the only left-footed player at the national level, is making waves in a country where sports have traditionally been dominated by men. Her unique skill, combined with her determination to defy societal norms, has positioned her as a role model for young women across South Sudan.

“I told myself, if I practice with boys, I can be much stronger than others,” Filda shared, expressing her commitment to breaking barriers in football.

Growing up in Yei, a region in Western Equatoria heavily impacted by years of conflict, Filda has faced numerous challenges. Many women in her community lost their homes and loved ones during the war. Yet, as peace returns, opportunities are slowly emerging, allowing women like Filda to pursue their dreams.

“For my country, I want peace and love. I want my fellow girls to follow in my footsteps,” Filda said, urging parents to support their daughters in pursuing sports despite traditional opposition.

Filda recently made her mark during an all-female football match organized by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, an event aimed at promoting unity and peace among the country’s youth.

Balancing her football career with her job as a gas station attendant, while also raising her child and supporting her extended family, Filda’s determination continues to inspire young women across Yei. Her story is not only a testament to perseverance but also a symbol of the growing movement for gender equality in South Sudan.

With passion and hard work, Filda Bandas is proving that no obstacle is too great to overcome, paving the way for future generations of female athletes.
