Burkina Faso authorities urged to restore media freedom after VOA suspension

Burkina Faso’s government is facing growing calls to lift its recent suspension of Voice of America (VOA) broadcasts, as media advocates highlight the importance of press freedom. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) urged the Burkinabe authorities to reverse their decision and allow local media to work with international outlets without restrictions.

The suspension, issued by the High Council of Communication (CSC) on October 7, 2024, follows a VOA broadcast covering insecurity in the Sahel region. VOA has denied allegations that the program justified terrorism and has complied with the ban. Media watchdogs, including CPJ, emphasize that open media access is vital to addressing the country’s security concerns while supporting the search for missing journalists.
