Burkina Faso hopeful of securing talented goalkeeper Alban Lafont for national team
Burkina Faso is optimistic about securing former France youth international, Alban Lafont, for their national team as the FC Nantes goalkeeper reconsiders his international future.
Lafont, who was born in Ouagadougou, has yet to feature for France’s senior team despite being called up in September 2022. With 36 appearances for France’s youth teams, he remains a highly regarded talent.
“We believe Alban Lafont would be a fantastic addition to our squad,” said Aristide Bance, Burkina Faso’s head of recruitment. “His experience and ability would significantly strengthen our team.”
Lafont has expressed that the decision is not an easy one but acknowledges the need for regular international play. “It’s a tough choice. I’ve always dreamed of playing for France, but the competition is strong. I need to think about what’s best for my future,” Lafont admitted.
With Mike Maignan solidifying his position as France’s first-choice goalkeeper, and the emergence of Brice Samba and Alphonse Areola, Lafont’s opportunities with France appear limited, making Burkina Faso’s offer all the more appealing.
“Alban is an exceptional talent,” said France manager Didier Deschamps. “But with the strength of our squad, we’ll have to see what the future holds for him.”
Burkina Faso is hopeful that Lafont’s decision will soon turn in their favor, marking a significant gain for their national team.
