Nigeria: Federal govt initiates Yoruba language-based initiative to teach mathematics
The Nigerian Federal Government, through the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), has introduced a new program to teach mathematics in the Yoruba language.
The initiative, aimed at early-grade students, seeks to improve understanding of mathematical concepts by integrating Yoruba into the mathematics curriculum.
NIEPA hosted a two-day training for educators, which focused on translating the primary school mathematics curriculum into Yoruba.

Renowned experts, including Dr. Kehinde Adenegan and Dr. Sulaymon Mohammad Raji, led sessions on the role of indigenous languages in education and culturally relevant teaching practices.
The workshop aims to support bilingual education, enhance cultural appreciation, and provide a more inclusive learning environment.
Dr. David Shofoyeke, NIEPA’s acting Director General, noted that similar initiatives in northern Nigeria use Hausa for early-grade subjects, emphasizing the importance of embracing local languages in other regions as well.
