President Tshisekedi announces commission to address constitutional changes in DRC

In a proactive step toward governance Changes, President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo DRC announced plans to create a commission that will examine potential country’s Constitutional updates.Speaking to a supportive crowd in Kisangani, Tshisekedi highlighted that the current 2006 Constitution may not fully reflect the nation’s unique realities and evolving needs.

The president emphasized that the commission, set to begin its work next year, aims to address issues like the delayed formation of government and regional assemblies, which he attributed to “conflicting interests” within political coalitions. He reassured citizens that the proposed changes would serve the country and not extend his presidential term, as some critics suggest.

This announcement follows long-standing calls from Tshisekedi’s party, the UDPS, and echoes the vision of the party’s late founder, Etienne Tshisekedi, who also advocated for such reforms. The current Constitution, adopted in 2006 and last amended in 2011, was originally established as a milestone of the national unity government.
