Protesters in eastern DRC rally for peace, support for the Congolese armed forces

Hundreds of demonstrators in Butembo, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, took to the streets on Tuesday to show solidarity with the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) and advocate for peace in the region.

The peaceful protest emphasized the community’s support for military efforts to restore stability and called for decisive action to end the long-standing conflict.

Frank Mukendi, one of the demonstrators, expressed the community’s readiness to work alongside the FARDC, saying, “We stand behind them, we support them, and we are ready to collaborate in achieving peace.” The demonstrators urged the government to back the military fully and avoid any politically motivated orders that could hinder progress.

Muhindo Shafi, a civil society member, highlighted the importance of focusing on long-term peace, dismissing external distractions.

The community is also seeking justice for the ongoing violence by the ADF rebel group, which has impacted North Kivu since 2014.

The demonstrators called for enhanced resources to support the military’s efforts in tackling both the M23 and ADF rebel groups.

Congolese and Ugandan forces, demonstrators are hopeful that increased cooperation and strengthened military ties, as recently directed by President Félix Tshisekedi, will bring lasting peace to the region.
