Ruto appoints Kindiki as new deputy following Gachagua’s impeachment

Kenyan President William Ruto appoints the nomination of his Interior Minister, Kithuri Kindiki, as the new Deputy President on Friday. This decision comes in the wake of the historic impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua, Ruto’s running mate from the 2022 elections, who was dismissed by the Senate just a day earlier.

Kithuri Kindiki, a 52-year-old academic and political heavyweight, was a frontrunner for the role, as highlighted by various Kenyan media sources. The impeachment of Gachagua has captivated the nation, which is recognized as a stable democracy within a region often fraught with political turmoil.

The unfolding saga continued on Friday when National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula officially announced Ruto’s selection of Kindiki. He urged parliamentarians to expedite the vote to confirm the new appointment, signaling a swift transition in leadership.

Having served as the Interior Minister for over two years, Kindiki is no stranger to the political arena. However, his tenure has not been without controversy, particularly regarding allegations of police brutality during anti-government protests that erupted earlier this year. The country watches closely as Ruto’s administration navigates this pivotal moment in its political landscape.
