Activists and organizations advocating for food rights have called on the government to establish better infrastructure to preserve food, particularly during times of surplus.

This appeal comes as Uganda joins global celebrations for World Food Day, with a focus on ensuring food security, reducing malnutrition, and improving overall food safety.

The event was marked by national celebrations in Serere District under the theme “Right to foods for a better life and better future.”

Stakeholders emphasized the need for a concerted government effort to build food storage facilities across the country.

They noted that while bumper harvests are beneficial, a lack of proper storage leads to significant food waste, which in turn exacerbates food insecurity. By creating these facilities, the country could better manage its food resources and reduce post-harvest losses.

Additionally, the organization’s are pushing for stronger enforcement of food safety regulations and standards. Ensuring food safety is critical to achieving food security, they argued, as unsafe food practices contribute to malnutrition and poor health outcomes. By enforcing these standards, the government could help protect public health while simultaneously addressing the country’s food needs.

Activists remain hopeful that with a deliberate focus on food infrastructure, Uganda can make significant strides in its efforts to eradicate hunger and ensure a better future for its citizens. Investing in storage and safety measures would not only safeguard the nation’s food supply but also promote sustainable development and economic growth.
