Uganda is taking significant strides in preparedness for future disease outbreaks with the development of its advanced laboratory systems. National Health Laboratories, with support from the Global Fund, has played a key role in detecting and responding to threats such as mpox, Ebola, and COVID-19.

Since 2020, the Global Fund has invested $36 million in Uganda’s laboratory infrastructure, with an additional $8.8 million set to be injected into the system. These funds have enabled the hiring of more laboratory technicians, the procurement of crucial medical supplies, and the purchase of high-quality equipment. This has bolstered the country’s capacity to investigate and prevent deadly diseases effectively.

In an innovative step, National Health Laboratories established a mobile lab equipped with portable biosafety tools, allowing for rapid detection of pathogens and safe testing. A fleet of 22 trucks and 400 motorcycles ensures that up to 8,000 samples are collected daily from across the country, demonstrating Uganda’s commitment to proactive public health measures.

Dr. Isaac Ssewanyana, a key figure in Uganda’s public health system, emphasized the importance of these laboratories in maintaining preparedness for future disease threats. The investments and innovations not only strengthen Uganda’s immediate outbreak response capabilities but also serve as a model for other nations in the region.

Uganda is well-positioned to tackle emerging health challenges and safeguard its population from future pandemics.
