Equatorial Guinea takes steps to safeguard national integrity

The government of Equatorial Guinea has announced temporary restrictions on multimedia sharing through mobile data on WhatsApp.

The restriction follows a high-profile investigation into ethical misconduct within the country’s public sector, involving Baltasar Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency.

The decision to limit WhatsApp media sharing aims to curb the spread of inappropriate content and protect citizens’ privacy.

“Our priority is to maintain a respectful digital environment that aligns with our cultural and national values,” an official spokesperson stated. “This temporary measure is essential to ensure sensitive content is not misused or publicly disseminated in a way that undermines the integrity of our nation.”

Amid the restrictions, some citizens voiced their concerns. Ahora EG, a local media platform, reported mixed reactions from the public.

“Should an entire country pay for the actions of a few?” one resident remarked, adding, “In a world where digitalization is more important than ever, shutting down our platforms affects not just entertainment but also work and educational activities.”

At the same time, other citizens expressed support for the government’s decision. “We understand the need for order and respect in our digital spaces,” another source shared. “This is about protecting our society and making sure that we use technology responsibly.”

To further reinforce public integrity, Vice President Teddy Nguema announced plans to install surveillance cameras in all state offices, a proactive step to promote transparency and prevent misconduct among officials. “This measure is about maintaining high standards in our public service,” Nguema stated.

“Our commitment to accountability reflects our dedication to building trust between the government and its citizens.”

The restrictions, while temporary, have opened a larger conversation about responsible communication and digital governance in Equatorial Guinea.
