Gambia: Mayor Malick-Lowe inaugurates lifesaving borehole for women in Bajana Village

In a significant milestone for women in Bajana Village, Foni, Mayor Rohey Malick-Lowe has inaugurated a vital new borehole to ensure consistent water access for this underserved community.

In partnership with His Excellency Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, this borehole is part of a broader commitment to empower women in The Gambia, particularly those in marginalized areas.


“In fulfillment of my commitment to support women in The Gambia, especially in less privileged communities, yesterday together with the Refela executive members, [I] presided over the inauguration of a borehole for the women of Bajana Village,” stated Malick-Lowe.

The event, attended by community leaders, Refela coordinators from across the region, Member of Parliament Hon. Amie Colley, women gardeners, and village elders, underscored the impact of this project on community well-being. The community welcomed the borehole with joy, expressing their commitment to safeguard its longevity.

She acknowledged the residents’ enthusiasm and highlighted the importance of water access as a key goal for Refela and within the broader Sustainable Development Goal 6 framework.

The ceremony began with a Qur’anic recitation in honor of Senator Dar and his family, reflecting their longstanding support for women and girls.

“He has long been known as a staunch believer of the Islamic faith and an advocate for women and girls’ empowerment,” Malick-Lowe noted. “All his interventions and support are done out of goodwill and for Allah’s sake.”

She reaffirmed Refela’s dedication to its “Water for Women” initiative, which aims to provide boreholes to women gardeners across the country. “We understand the importance of water, especially how it can empower women to gain freedom and have a voice in their communities,” she said.

Looking forward, Malick-Lowe announced that similar projects will soon benefit the villages of Sohm, Janack, and Jarra Toyantaba within the next three weeks.

She, therefore, thanked Senator Dar and expressed her gratitude to all attendees, including the women, elders, and cultural groups who celebrated this milestone with the Bajana Village community.

“I wish to sincerely thank our partner, my brother and friend His Excellency Mohammad Ishaq Dar and his family, and pray that Allah rewards him abundantly,” she concluded.
