New President of Botswana lifts visa ban on Julius Malema, invites EFF leader for inauguration
South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, has been invited to attend the inauguration of Botswana’s new president, Duma Gideon Boko, following the lifting of a long-standing visa ban. This invitation marks Malema’s first visit to Botswana in more than ten years and reflects a significant diplomatic shift under Boko’s administration.
Malema’s visa restriction dates back to 2011, when he openly criticized former Botswana President Ian Khama’s government, calling it a “puppet regime” and alluding to potential political unrest. The ban on his entry was seen as symbolic of the strained relationship between the EFF leader and Botswana’s previous government.
President Boko’s decision to invite Malema is being viewed as a diplomatic step toward fostering stronger regional ties. “This invitation represents a new era of engagement and mutual respect between Botswana and South Africa,” said a representative from Botswana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Namibia’s opposition leader, McHenry Venaani, will also be attending the inauguration, accompanied by members of his staff. This collective attendance by key African political figures highlights a collaborative spirit in the region. Venaani stated, “I’m honored to join this momentous occasion and witness a fresh chapter in Botswana’s history.”
President Boko’s inauguration is anticipated to set a tone of openness and cooperation, signifying a shift toward progressive regional alliances. Malema expressed gratitude for the invitation, noting that “this gesture reflects President Boko’s commitment to fostering unity among African nations.”
The ceremony, to be held in Botswana’s capital, Gaborone, is expected to draw political leaders and dignitaries from across the continent, celebrating a new chapter in Botswana’s leadership.
