Nigerian University launches Africa-focused leadership centre to shape future leaders

Covenant University, Nigeria has launched an Africa-focused leadership development centre aimed at equipping Nigerian students with essential skills for addressing the continent’s leadership challenges, according to Dr David Oyedepo, the university’s Chancellor.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, Oyedepo described the new centre as a critical part of the university’s mission to develop leaders capable of tackling societal issues.

“The leadership development centre is focused on solving character problems among young people in unmistakable terms,” he said. He emphasised that the centre is intended not only to educate but also to instil values that empower students to drive positive change across Africa.

The university has also introduced online diploma and certificate courses in leadership as part of this initiative, broadening access to leadership training. According to Oyedepo, “Leadership development studies equipped graduates with the skills and competencies required to proffer solutions to myriads of problems.”

Covenant University’s leadership programme has reportedly contributed to its top ranking for employability among Nigerian universities, as students benefit from a comprehensive approach that blends character building with practical leadership skills.

The chancellor urged other universities across the country to establish similar centres to address Nigeria’s leadership gap, suggesting these initiatives could serve as transformative “solution centres” for character and leadership development.

“The university is succeeding in positively remodelling the behaviour pattern of youths through the leadership development centre,” Oyedepo stated, noting that this focus on leadership qualities is vital for creating responsible, solution-oriented leaders.
