Algeria overtakes Nigeria in FIFA rankings as Morocco retains top spot in Africa
Morocco has maintained its position as the highest-ranked African nation in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday, November 28, 2024.
Despite their continental dominance, the Atlas Lions dropped from 13th to 14th in the global rankings, overtaken by Uruguay, which surged after a string of impressive performances.
Morocco delivered commanding performances in the November international break of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, defeating Gabon 5-1 and Lesotho 7-0.
These victories earned them an additional 6.61 ranking points.
However, Uruguay’s gain of over 15 points propelled them past Morocco, claiming the 11th position globally.
Algeria climbed to 4th place in Africa, overtaking Nigeria, which experienced a disappointing international break.
The Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with Benin and a 2-1 loss to Rwanda cost them 21.06 ranking points, causing a drop from 36th to 44th globally and 5th in Africa.
Algeria, on the other hand, secured a 5-1 victory against Liberia and managed a goalless draw with Equatorial Guinea.
These results allowed the Fennecs to retain their global ranking of 36th, cementing their position as one of Africa’s top teams.
Niger made the most significant leap in the latest rankings, climbing nine places to 122nd globally and 34th in Africa. Wins against Sudan (4-0) and Ghana (2-1) added 31.23 points to their tally, marking a historic rise in both global and continental standings.
Senegal advanced three spots to 17th globally, strengthening its hold as the second-best team in Africa.
Wins against Burkina Faso (1-0) and Burundi (2-0), driven by rising star Habib Diarra, contributed to their improved standing.
Comoros also continued its remarkable ascent, moving five spots to 103rd globally and 23rd in Africa.
Their qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations highlights their growing prominence on the international stage.
