Ghanaians will head to the polls on December 7, 2024, to elect their next president and 275 members of parliament.

The election is shaping up to be a tightly contested race primarily between Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Recent polls suggest a close contest, with Dr. Bawumia slightly leading with 49.4% against Mahama’s 45.1%, while undecided voters make up 5.2%.

The stakes are high as this election is seen as a litmus test for Ghana’s democratic resilience. Key issues on the agenda include addressing election security, preventing political vigilantism, and combating the spread of misinformation.

National security agencies, civil society groups, and political parties are collaborating to ensure a peaceful process.

Despite concerns over political tensions and fear-mongering, Ghana’s legacy as a beacon of democracy in Africa remains intact. Stakeholders are calling for unity and adherence to democratic principles, emphasizing peaceful dialogue and the rule of law as the nation approaches this critical moment.

This election will not only determine the next leadership but also reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to democratic values and national stability.
