Nigerian President Tinubu to lead Africa’s energy transformation at Dar es Salaam Summit
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will embark on a pivotal journey to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Sunday, January 26, 2025, to participate in the highly anticipated Africa Heads of State Energy Summit, scheduled for January 27-28, 2025.
This summit, hosted by the Tanzanian government in collaboration with the African Development Bank Group and the World Bank, is a significant step toward realizing “Mission 300″—an ambitious initiative aimed at providing electricity access to 300 million people across Africa by 2030.
During the summit, African leaders, private sector representatives, development partners, and civil society organizations will come together to strategize and tackle the continent’s energy challenges. President Tinubu, alongside his fellow heads of state, will focus on critical areas such as accelerating energy access in underserved regions, promoting renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and mobilizing private sector investment to strengthen Africa’s energy infrastructure.
“This summit represents a critical opportunity for African nations to unite in our collective mission to achieve universal energy access. Nigeria remains committed to playing a leadership role in driving sustainable energy solutions for our continent,” President Tinubu said, emphasizing the significance of the event.
On the first day of the summit, participating nations, including Nigeria, will present their national energy strategies, known as compacts, which outline their approaches to achieving universal energy access within the next five years. On the second day, Heads of State will endorse the Dar es Salaam Energy Declaration, establishing a unified roadmap to achieve the goals of Mission 300.
As part of Nigeria’s commitment, President Tinubu will deliver the national statement, underscoring Nigeria’s dedication to universal energy access. He will also highlight the country’s groundbreaking clean energy initiatives and its strategies to lead integrated energy solutions across Africa.
Accompanying President Tinubu will be Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu; Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen; and other senior government officials.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, commented, “The Dar es Salaam Summit underscores Africa’s collective resolve to address our energy challenges and create a sustainable future for all. President Tinubu’s participation reaffirms Nigeria’s leadership in shaping the continent’s energy landscape.”
After the summit, President Tinubu is expected to return to Abuja, bringing forward new strategies and commitments to advance energy access and development both in Nigeria and across Africa.
