Nigerian Monarch Olu of Epe Dies at 86

The ancient town of Epe has been thrown into mourning following the passing of its revered monarch, the Olu of Epe Kingdom, Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale. The 86-year-old traditional ruler died in the early hours of Saturday, May 31, 2025.
His demise was confirmed by High Chief Odedeogboro Balogun of Epe Kingdom, Musiliu Adeniyi, who spoke to PUNCH Online on Saturday morning. “The news is true. It was this morning. He will be buried 4’O clock today,” Adeniyi disclosed, in line with Islamic traditions that demand swift interment.
Oba Adewale, who was the 19th Olu of Epe, held a deeply respected place in the hearts of his people. Before ascending the throne, he served in various prestigious roles within the kingdom’s traditional hierarchy. He was first the Otun-Balogun—the third-highest chieftaincy title in Epe—before rising to the rank of Balogun and ultimately being crowned king.
Outside of his traditional duties, Oba Adewale also had a distinguished career in public service. He retired as a Director of Administration in the Ministry of Education and also served as the Executive Secretary at the Ministry of Lands.
His death marks the end of an era for the Epe community, where he was not only a traditional ruler but also a symbol of peace, wisdom, and development.
