Breaking Barriers, Not Just Ceilings: Mayor Malick-Lowe Celebrates REFELA Women’s Empowerment Journey in China

The Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick-Lowe, has lauded members of REFELA (Network for Locally Elected Women of Africa) for their recent strides during an international engagement in the People’s Republic of China.

Taking to social media to express her pride and support, Mayor Lowe emphasized the true meaning of empowerment, stating: “Building the capacity of women is a crucial aspect of empowerment. By providing them with the skills, knowledge, and resources they need, they can gain greater control over their lives to make informed decisions and participate fully in their communities.”

The mayor’s remarks came in recognition of REFELA members who are currently participating in a high-level program in China aimed at strengthening the leadership and influence of African women in local governance.

She applauded their efforts and courage to break traditional limitations: “Proud to see our Refela members doing what is expected of them at the People’s Republic of China – breaking the glass ceiling.”

Mayor Lowe, a known advocate for women’s rights and inclusion, also took the opportunity to remind her audience that true empowerment transcends financial handouts. Her statement was both motivational and cautionary: “Congratulations REFELA ladies! Keep at it and again don’t allow to be deceived. Empowerment is not about money. It is about getting you a sustainable effort to equip you to head face-front into a very uncertain and unpredictable future.”

Ending on an optimistic and forward-looking note, she revealed the network’s next stop in their global mission: “Together we can change the narrative and shape our world! Next destination Sweden!”

The REFELA initiative continues to gather momentum as African women leaders gain international platforms to amplify their voices and challenge global norms in leadership, equity, and development.
