Ghana 2024: ECOWAS mission commends peaceful, orderly elections
The ECOWAS Observation Mission to Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections has described the voting process as peaceful and orderly.
The mission, led by Nigeria’s former vice president, Namadi Sambo, observed that most polling stations began operations promptly at 7 a.m. as required by law.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Mr. Sambo reported that voters were already in queues before balloting commenced in several polling stations in Greater Accra, home to over three million of the nation’s 18.8 million registered voters.
At the Kanda polling station in Ayawaso East Constituency, a 96-year-old voter, Charles Owusu, was among the early arrivals. According to Mr. Sambo, voting began promptly, with all required materials, staff, and security personnel in place.
The first voter at this station, 55-year-old Patience Yinne, completed her process in about five minutes.
The ECOWAS mission deployed over 120 observers across Ghana’s regions and districts to monitor the elections.
Sorting and declaration of results are currently underway across the country.
