In a landmark shift in continental governance, Angolan President João Lourenço has taken the helm as the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) for 2025, marking a new chapter in the organization’s leadership.

This transition was officially announced during the 38th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where leaders from across the continent convened to shape the future of African unity and progress.

Lourenço’s ascension to the AU’s top position follows the tenure of Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, with the new leadership team reflecting a diverse representation of Africa’s regions.

The 2025 AU Assembly Bureau comprises:

  • Chairperson: Republic of Angola (Southern Region)
  • 1st Vice Chairperson: Republic of Burundi (Central Region)
  • 2nd Vice Chairperson: Republic of Ghana (Western Region)
  • 3rd Vice Chairperson: United Republic of Tanzania (Eastern Region)
  • Rapporteur: Islamic Republic of Mauritania (Northern Region)

In a closely watched parallel election, Djibouti’s seasoned diplomat Mahmoud Ali Youssouf secured the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC). Youssouf, who has served as Djibouti’s Foreign Minister since 2005, triumphed over prominent contenders, including Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Madagascar’s ex-Foreign Minister Richard Randriamandrato. His victory was confirmed by Djibouti’s Economy and Finance Minister, Ilyas Dawaleh, who expressed pride in Youssouf’s achievement, stating, “He has won the election.”

The United States swiftly congratulated Youssouf on his election, emphasizing a commitment to collaboration on shared priorities. A U.S. statement noted, “We look forward to working together to advance peace, security, and prosperity—interests that are vital to both the United States and Africa.”

These leadership changes come at a critical juncture for the African Union, as the continent grapples with pressing challenges such as political instability, economic disparities, and security threats. The newly appointed leaders are tasked with navigating these complexities, strengthening regional cooperation, and driving sustainable development across Africa. Their tenure will be pivotal in shaping the AU’s ability to foster unity and address the aspirations of its member states.
