Smoke from thousands of crop fires in northern India combined with other pollutants to create a noxious grey cocktail enveloping the megacity.<\/p><div class=\"afric-content\" id=\"afric-3207146270\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schools.nyc.gov\/hello?utm_source=ecm-digital&#038;utm_medium=cpc&#038;utm_campaign=lac-dex-2026&#038;utm_content=french\" aria-label=\"French&#8212;300&#215;250\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaparrot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/French-300x250-1.gif?fit=300%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"  class=\"no-lazyload\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>According to monitoring firm IQAir, levels of the most dangerous particles, PM2.5, so tiny they can enter the bloodstream were 588 per cubic meter early on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>That is almost 40 times the daily maximum recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). IQAir rated overall pollution levels as \u201chazardous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really the worst time to be out in Delhi. One never wakes up fresh with this pollution,\u201d said policeman Hem Raj, 42.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe body feels tired and lethargic in the mornings&#8230; The eyes are always watery and throat scratchy after spending hours on the Delhi roads,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Every winter, cooler air, smoke from farmers burning stubble, and emissions from vehicles and other sources combine to create a deadly smog reducing visibility in the city of 20 million people.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020 a Lancet study attributed 1.67 million deaths to air pollution in India in 2019, including almost 17,500 in the capital.<\/p>\n<p>Delhi authorities regularly announce different plans to reduce the pollution, for example by halting construction work, but to little effect.<\/p>\n<p>The burning of rice paddies after harvests across Punjab and other states persists every year despite efforts to persuade farmers to use different methods.<\/p>\n<p>The situation is also a political flashpoint \u2013 with the capital and Punjab governed by the Aam Aadmi Party, a rival to Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of today, Punjab, a state run by the AAP, has seen an over 19 percent rise in farm fires over 2021,\u201d environment minister Bhupender Yadav, who is from the BJP, tweeted on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no doubt over who has turned Delhi into a gas chamber,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been here for a long time now and the situation has only become worse. We spend 8 to 10 hours on the Delhi roads every day and it\u2019s tough because pollution hits everyone,\u201d said Brij Lal, 54, another policeman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there isn\u2019t much we can do about the situation since police have to be out on the roads, among the people all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, the smog air pollution in New Delhi hit \u201chazardous\u201d levels.
