{"id":1768,"date":"2022-11-29T07:13:10","date_gmt":"2022-11-29T07:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaparrot.com\/?p=1768"},"modified":"2022-11-29T07:14:32","modified_gmt":"2022-11-29T07:14:32","slug":"zimbabwe-power-shortage-to-worsen-as-hydro-plant-halts-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaparrot.com\/index.php\/2022\/11\/29\/zimbabwe-power-shortage-to-worsen-as-hydro-plant-halts-generation\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe power shortage to worsen as hydro plant halts generation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Electricity shortages that have been plaguing Zimbabwe are set to worsen after an authority that manages the country\u2019s biggest dam said water levels are now too low to continue power generation activities.<\/p><div class=\"afric-content\" id=\"afric-3552862563\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schools.nyc.gov\/hello?utm_source=ecm-digital&#038;utm_medium=cpc&#038;utm_campaign=lac-dex-2026&#038;utm_content=french\" aria-label=\"French&#8212;300&#215;250\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaparrot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/French-300x250-1.gif?fit=300%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"  class=\"no-lazyload\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter dated Nov. 25 and seen by Reuters, the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) told the Zimbabwe Power Company that the Kariba South hydropower station had used more than its 2022 water allocation and that the Kariba Dam\u2019s usable storage was only 4.6% full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ZRA manages the Kariba Dam on behalf of the Zimbabwean and Zambian governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Zambezi River Authority is left with no choice but to firmly guide that \u2026 generation activities at the South Bank Power Station are wholly suspended henceforth until January 2023 when a further review of the substantive hydrological outlook at Kariba will be undertaken,\u201d the letter read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zimbabwe has suffered acute power shortages for several years, as successive droughts have resulted in poor inflows into the Kariba Dam and as ageing coal-fired power stations have repeatedly broken down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has licensed some independent solar producers to try to augment supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kariba South has an installed capacity of 1,050 megawatts but has been producing well below that due to low water levels in the dam.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Electricity shortages that have been plaguing Zimbabwe are set to worsen after an authority that manages the country\u2019s biggest dam said water levels are now too low to continue power generation activities.
