{"id":2006,"date":"2022-12-12T19:13:02","date_gmt":"2022-12-12T19:13:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaparrot.com\/?p=2006"},"modified":"2022-12-12T19:13:02","modified_gmt":"2022-12-12T19:13:02","slug":"us-court-begins-hearing-testimony-from-venezuelan-officials-on-diplomatic-status-of-alex-saab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaparrot.com\/index.php\/2022\/12\/12\/us-court-begins-hearing-testimony-from-venezuelan-officials-on-diplomatic-status-of-alex-saab\/","title":{"rendered":"US court begins hearing testimony from Venezuelan officials on diplomatic status of Alex Saab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A US court on Monday began hearing testimony from Venezuelan officials on the diplomatic status of Alex Saab, an ally of President Nicolas Maduro who is in a Miami jail awaiting trial on a charge of money laundering.<\/p><div class=\"afric-content\" id=\"afric-326625788\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schools.nyc.gov\/hello?utm_source=ecm-digital&#038;utm_medium=cpc&#038;utm_campaign=lac-dex-2026&#038;utm_content=french\" aria-label=\"French&#8212;300&#215;250\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaparrot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/French-300x250-1.gif?fit=300%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"  class=\"no-lazyload\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Saab\u2019s attorneys have asked US District Judge Robert Scola to dismiss the charge, arguing Saab was on a diplomatic mission to Iran to buy fuel and humanitarian supplies when he was arrested while his plane refueled in Cape Verde islands in the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>US prosecutors said Saab, a Colombia-born businessman who was extradited in 2021 from Cape Verde, siphoned around $350 million out of Venezuela via the United States as part of a scheme that involved bribing Venezuelan government officials.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign ministry archive official Maria Gonzalez appeared via Zoom at the hearing and when shown documents referring to Saab as a diplomat, she described them as authentic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a letter that Minister Jorge Arreaza grants to Mr. Alex Saab where he gives his character as a special envoy to carry out negotiations for the purchase of food and medicine,\u201d said Gonzalez, referring to the former foreign minister.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said Saab should not be recognized as a diplomat and they dispute the veracity of documents provided by the defense.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said a digital copy of an Official Gazette, a government publication that records Venezuelan government appointments, was altered to include his designation as a diplomat and that the original document makes no such reference.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence provided by Saab\u2019s defense at best showed he had the status of a \u201cspecial mission\u201d diplomat and that does not provide diplomatic immunity under the Vienna Convention, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>Maduro\u2019s allies have characterized Washington\u2019s pursuit of Saab as part of an \u201ceconomic war\u201d on Venezuela being waged by the US government.
