{"id":2380,"date":"2023-01-10T07:42:35","date_gmt":"2023-01-10T07:42:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaparrot.com\/?p=2380"},"modified":"2023-01-10T07:42:35","modified_gmt":"2023-01-10T07:42:35","slug":"victims-of-deadly-twin-parks-fire-remembered-one-year-later-by-bronx-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaparrot.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/10\/victims-of-deadly-twin-parks-fire-remembered-one-year-later-by-bronx-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Victims of deadly Twin Parks fire remembered one year later by Bronx community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bronx community came together Monday to remember the 17 lives lost when a fire tore through a Bronx high rise one year ago.<\/p><div class=\"afric-content\" id=\"afric-2031258601\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schools.nyc.gov\/hello?utm_source=ecm-digital&#038;utm_medium=cpc&#038;utm_campaign=lac-dex-2026&#038;utm_content=french\" aria-label=\"French&#8212;300&#215;250\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaparrot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/French-300x250-1.gif?fit=300%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"  class=\"no-lazyload\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Monday marked one year since the Twin Parks fire in the Bronx that left 17 people dead and many more injured and displaced.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the community came together today to remember the lives lost, with services and a street renaming in honor of one of the 8 children who died in the fire.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the victims, who ranged in age from 2 to 50, were immigrants from West Africa and part of a closely-knit community that took root in the building. <\/p>\n<p>Officials said the fire began when a space heater caught fire and spread because self-closing doors that were supposed to stay shut to contain smoke and fire did not work properly. <\/p>\n<p>A square in front of the building was renamed 17 Abdoili Touray Way, in honor of a pioneering Gambian community leader and the 17 victims. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to make sure that a similar tragedy never happens again, not in the Bronx, not anywhere in the city of New York,&#8221; said Osvaldo Feliz, a New York City Council member.<\/p>\n<p>Feliz said that the determination for such a tragedy to never happen again has resulted in city, state and federal lawmakers working together to strengthen housing laws and make sure buildings are safe for families. <\/p>\n<p>A number of the victims&#8217; families have filed lawsuits against various entities and others have returned to the Gambia.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bronx community came together Monday to remember the 17 lives lost when a fire tore through a Bronx high rise one year ago.
