{"id":662,"date":"2022-10-02T07:02:10","date_gmt":"2022-10-02T07:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaparrot.com\/?p=662"},"modified":"2022-10-02T07:02:16","modified_gmt":"2022-10-02T07:02:16","slug":"critics-slam-bronx-migrant-tent-as-illegal-as-mayor-adams-continues-with-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaparrot.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/02\/critics-slam-bronx-migrant-tent-as-illegal-as-mayor-adams-continues-with-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Critics slam Bronx migrant tent as &#8216;illegal&#8217; as Mayor Adams continues with plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Critics of Mayor Adams\u2019 plan to house asylum seekers in refugee-style tents slammed it as \u201cillegal\u201d and \u201cinhumane\u201d Friday as questions continued to loom over how exactly \u2014 and whether \u2014 his administration intends to comply with the state\u2019s right to shelter law.<\/p><div class=\"afric-content\" id=\"afric-2578357159\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schools.nyc.gov\/hello?utm_source=ecm-digital&#038;utm_medium=cpc&#038;utm_campaign=lac-dex-2026&#038;utm_content=french\" aria-label=\"French&#8212;300&#215;250\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaparrot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/French-300x250-1.gif?fit=300%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"  class=\"no-lazyload\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis pitch was sold as a state-of-the-art facility with food, beds and a warm New York City welcome,\u201d Councilwoman Shahana Hanif (D-Brooklyn), chairwoman of the Council\u2019s Immigration Committee, said during a rally outside City Hall. \u201cBut there is nothing state of the art about a refugee camp built outdoors in a flood zone in October.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hanif\u2019s criticisms came just hours before a Council hearing into Adams\u2019 policy and a week after he and top city officials announced their latest plan to address the influx of migrants into the city by building five tents in an Orchard Beach parking lot in the Bronx. The plan, which has not yet been completed, almost immediately raised questions over whether it was being pursued to avoid following the state\u2019s right to shelter laws, which require local governments to provide housing to people who seek it within a prescribed timeframe.<\/p>\n<p>The city has been in apparent violation of that law dozens of times since Adams took office in January.<\/p>\n<p>Hanif and other critics railed against the mayor\u2019s policy Friday for a laundry list of reasons: the administration didn\u2019t consult with local elected officials before making its announcement last week, the location is remote and prone to flooding and questions remain about how exactly the tents will be used to assist asylum seekers.<\/p>\n<p>Hanif also bristled over the revelation that a contractor handling the tents in Orchard Beach, Texas-based SLSCO, helped construct former President Donald Trump\u2019s southern border wall. She called Adams\u2019 overall Orchard Beach plan \u201cillegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For months now, asylum seekers from South and Central America have been flowing into the city, many on buses directed here by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has sought to use the busing as a way to criticize President Biden\u2019s border policy. So far, Adams\u2019 administration estimates that more than 13,000 migrants have come to the Big Apple, placing a strain on the city\u2019s already burdened shelter system.<\/p>\n<p>The tents in Orchard Beach are intended as a way to mitigate that crisis, but detractors view it as the wrong answer.<\/p>\n<p>Queens Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz questioned why the migrants must be housed in tents when other alternatives exist. She suggested the city could provide shelter in the Javits Center, college dormitories and vacant hotels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge our state and our city administration to work together finding different options because there has to be,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have money to pay for all of that. We are a very rich city.
