Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has died at the age of 67.

Succumbing to leukemia in Lagos State, where he received care from State House doctors, the governor’s health had been a growing concern.

Despite attempts to seek treatment abroad, his condition worsened, marked by the recent search for dialysis machines in his undisclosed Lagos location.

Governor Akeredolu’s health declined notably after returning to Nigeria in September from a three-month medical leave in Germany, AP learnt.

President Bola Tinubu had directed him to transfer power to Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who assumed the role of Acting Governor during Akeredolu’s absence.

The late governor’s efforts to govern remotely from Ibadan stirred public backlash, prompting the suspension of planned activities for his wife Betty’s 70th birthday celebration in July.

Akeredolu’s battle with leukemia, a challenging blood cancer affecting infection-fighting abilities, had been publicly disclosed in January.

Confirmed by sources at the Alagbaka Government House, leukemia encompasses various types, each with complex treatments and diverse symptoms, ranging from weakness and bruising to severe bleeding.

Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa now shoulders the responsibility of Acting Governor as Ondo State copes with the loss of its leader.

Amidst mourning, questions loom about the future political landscape in the aftermath of Governor Akeredolu’s passing.
