Chaos erupts in Papua new Guinea as riots claim 16 lives

In the aftermath of violent riots that left 16 dead across Papua New Guinea’s major cities, Prime Minister James Marape declares a 14-day state of emergency in the capital, Port Moresby. Troops now patrol the streets to quell the unrest.

The turmoil began in Port Moresby when disgruntled soldiers, police officers, and prison guards went on strike due to mysterious pay deductions.

The discontent quickly escalated, reaching the city of Lae, resulting in widespread chaos, with buildings ablaze, looting, and violence.

Prime Minister Marape vows to restore calm, warning that those responsible for the outbreaks of “lawlessness” will “pay the price.” One thousand soldiers stand by to reinforce security measures as the government addresses a payroll “glitch” that triggered the initial protests.

Despite the heightened military and police presence, a Port Moresby resident notes a return to normalcy with open shops, fuel stations, and resumed public transportation. However, concerns linger about potential nighttime disturbances.

Amid the chaos, AFPTV footage captures looters ransacking stores, stealing goods, and even making off with an entire chest freezer.

The City Pharmacy Limited, a major retail chain, reports stolen prescription medicines, urging the public to avoid using them.

Port Moresby General Hospital faces a surge in casualties, including gunshot wounds, “bush knife” lacerations, and burns.

The US embassy reports shots fired near its compound during police efforts to disperse looters. Additionally, China lodges a complaint with the Papua New Guinea government following reports of rioters targeting Chinese-owned businesses.

Prime Minister Marape emphasizes that “enough is enough,” recalling a similar incident in 2018.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath, the government works to address the root causes of the unrest while international concerns rise over the security situation and targeted attacks on businesses.
