Nigeria: Cholera outbreak in Zambia claims 222 lives with cases surging to 5,462

In a grim update from the Zambian health ministry on Monday, the death toll from the ongoing cholera outbreak has climbed to 222, while the total number of reported cases has spiked to 5,462.

The figures reflect the alarming escalation of the waterborne disease, which first reared its head in fresh outbreaks in October 2023, subsequently spreading to the seventh province.

The latest data reveals a harrowing toll of 27 additional deaths and 567 new cases in the last 24 hours alone, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The health ministry reports that since the emergence of the outbreaks, a total of 340 individuals have been discharged, bringing the cumulative discharges to 4,172. However, the number of individuals currently hospitalized remains at a concerning 1,059.

The affected districts have now extended to 31, spanning seven of the nation’s ten provinces. Lusaka, the capital city, bears the brunt of the outbreak, grappling with the highest number of reported cases.

In response to the escalating crisis, the health ministry has taken a strategic approach by designating the China-built National Heroes Stadium as a dedicated cholera treatment center. The move aims to centralize efforts to contain the outbreak and provide effective medical care to those affected.

This development underscores the critical need for immediate and comprehensive measures to curb the spread of cholera in Zambia. Authorities continue to work tirelessly to manage the crisis, emphasizing public health initiatives and the importance of community cooperation in the face of this escalating health emergency.
