Gambia recalls diplomats from Cuban embassy
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad for the Republic of The Gambia have announced the immediate recall of H.E Ambassador Sheikh Tijan Hydara and Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Vincent Mendy from their posts at the Gambian Embassy in Havana, Cuba.
The recall follows an unfortunate incident involving the diplomats, with initial findings indicating a breach of diplomatic norms.
The recall is not merely a reaction to the incident but a disciplinary measure taken by the government when diplomats are found to be in violation of the diplomatic code of conduct. The actions of both Ambassador Hydara and Mr. Mendy have compromised their integrity and privilege to represent The Gambia on the international stage.
To delve deeper into the incident and evaluate the overall functioning of the Embassy in Havana, the Gambian Government has dispatched a fact-finding mission to Cuba. The mission’s objectives include preventing future occurrences of similar nature and rectifying any irregularities in the embassy’s operations, ensuring they align with diplomatic standards. As investigations progress, the government has promised to keep the public informed with additional details.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscores its commitment to upholding the highest standards of diplomatic conduct. The government reassures Gambians that it remains resolute in addressing any behavior unbecoming of representatives abroad. This move reflects the government’s dedication to maintaining the integrity and reputation of the country’s diplomats.
In light of these developments, The Gambia takes a firm stance in reinforcing the significance of adherence to diplomatic norms and practices, emphasizing that such actions will not be tolerated. The recall serves as a reminder that ambassadors and their deputies are expected to embody the values and conduct that represent the nation positively on the global stage.
This recall demonstrates the government’s proactive approach to maintaining the credibility of its diplomatic corps, sending a clear message that any deviation from the expected standards will be met with swift and decisive action.
