GPF, INTERPOL join Forces to combat human trafficking with specialized training workshop
In a significant stride against human trafficking, the Gambia Police Force, in collaboration with INTERPOL, successfully concluded a four-day workshop titled “Specialized Training on Trafficking in Human Beings.”
The event, held at the GPF’s Credit Union Conference Hall in Kanifing, aimed to bolster the capabilities of law enforcement and judiciary representatives in identifying, investigating, and prosecuting human trafficking cases.
Under the umbrella of the Trafficking in Human Beings (THB) West Africa project, the workshop was funded by the US Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (DoS/INL). Representatives from various institutions within The Gambia’s Law Enforcement and Judiciary Sectors actively participated, underscoring a commitment to collaborative, multi-sectoral efforts.
Participants were introduced to the powerful WAPIS database, a crucial tool fostering cooperation among law enforcement agencies. Commissioner Pa Alieu Jawara, Head of National Central Bureau (NCB), spoke on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, General Abdoulie Sanyang. He affirmed the national authorities’ support for international police cooperation through INTERPOL channels to combat organized crime and dismantle criminal networks operating in the region.
Distinguished speakers at the event included Dr. Rebecca Taylor, Chief of the Political and Economic Officer of the US Embassy, and Ms. Enrica Pellacani, Head of EU Cooperation. Two INTERPOL delegations, from Lyon HQ and Abidjan Regional Bureau, were present. The delegation led by Mr. Adamou Liman Yahaya, coordinator of the Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants unit, included Silvia De Rosa, Focal Point for Victim Assistance, Patrice Kouassi, Criminal Intelligence Officer, Cristian Barbieri, Policy Analyst of the WAPIS Programme, and Carlos Gonzales Yepes, Country Officer for the Gambia of the WAPIS Programme.
